On January 28th a tweet was made that triggered a massive global debate over the practice of using pineapple as a pizza topping. Since then the leaders of Iceland and Canada have both chimed in each taking up different sides of the issue.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came out in favor of pineapple tweeting, “I have a pineapple. I have a pizza. And I stand behind this delicious Southwestern Ontario creation.” Meanwhile, President Johannesson of Iceland remarked that he was “fundamentally opposed” to the topping.

Oddly enough, as Trudeau points out, the “Hawaiian Pizza,” which uses pineapple and ham or bacon isn’t actually Hawaiian at all, but a Canadian creation from Sam Panopoulos who said, “nobody liked it at first. But after that, they went crazy about it.”

「ハワイアンピザ」と呼ばれるパイナップルとハムまたはベーコンを使ったピザは、実際はまったくハワイ由来のものではなく、奇妙な話だが、トルドーが指摘したとおりカナダで作られたものであり、これを発明したサム・ポノポウラス氏によると、「皆最初は好きでないんだ。しかし、その後でみんなハマってしまう」と言ったとのことです。
