On March 28, Hamza Yousaf will be appointed Chief Minister of Scotland. He will be the first person of color to lead the Scottish Home Rule Government and the first Muslim leader of a western democracy.

　This milestone comes five months after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak became the first Hindu national leader in the UK. The mayor of London is Sadiq Khan, the son of Pakistani immigrants.

　All three reflect the rapid diversification of British politics. The imperialist past, though sometimes painful, has shaped the multiracial present.

　Sunder Katwala of British Future, a think tank that studies identity and race, said, “British politics is familiar with diversity, something you don’t see in other European countries.”

　アイデンティティーと人種について研究しているシンクタンク「ブリティッシュ・フューチャー」のスンダー・カトワラ氏は「英国の政治は多様性になじんでおり、ほかの欧州諸国では見られないことだ」と話している。
