When his dog was born almost 30 years ago, Leonel Costa was only 8 years old. He had no way of knowing that the day would come when his dog Bobbi would be recorded as the oldest dog in the world.　The purebred Lafeiro do Alentejo dog turned 30 years and 269 days old on February 4. He was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest dog ever, breaking the record held for nearly 100 years by a herding dog that died in Australia in 1939 at the age of 29 years and 5 months. At the time of Bobbi’s birth, the Costa family had many animals and no money, so the father buried the newborn puppies. Bobbi survived by hiding in a pile of maki.

　30年ほど前に愛犬が生まれたとき、レオネル・コスタさんはまだ8歳でした。愛犬ボビが世界最高齢の犬として記録される日が来ようとは、知る由もありませんでした。ラフェイロ・ド・アレンテージョという純血種の犬で、２月４日に30歳と269日を迎え、オーストラリアで1939年に29歳５カ月で死んだ牧畜犬が100年近く保持していた記録を破り、史上最高齢の犬としてギネス世界記録に認定されました。ボビが誕生した当時、コスタ家は多くの動物を飼っており、お金がなかったため、父親が生まれたばかりの子犬たちを埋めてしまったそうですが、ボビはまきの山に隠れていたため生き延びたそうです。
