US President Joe Biden stated that the number of deaths caused by Hurricane Ian may rise to the highest ever recorded in Florida on September 29th. Countless places have become flooded, and a power outage has been continuing over a wide area. State governor Ron DeSantis explains that it was a “500-year flood event”.
State governor Ron DeSantis explains that two neighboring cities, Cape Coral and Fort Myers, have been dealt with severe floods, and two have been reported with hurricane-related deaths. According to the US Border Patrol, a boat carrying immigrants sank at the Florida coast, causing 20 people to go missing.
The National Hurricane Center explained on the 29th that while Hurricane Ian has turned itself into a tropical storm, it is still causing “devastating floods”. For the Mid-East areas of Florida, as well as in Georgia and South Carolina, the National Hurricane Center warned that there are still risks for “life-taking” floods, high tides, and gusts.
Orlando, Florida has also been damaged by the hurricane, causing the nearby Disney World to close. On PowerOutage.US, a website that shows the areas affected by a power outage, 2.6 million out of 11 million houses in Florida are still without electricity.
