Greece’s former king Constantine II, whose nine-year reign coincided with a turbulent period in the country’s political history, died Jan.10 aged 82, state media reported. Constantin II, the only son of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece, ascended the throne in 1964 after his father died, but his reign was marred by political instability that culminated in a military coup on April 21,1967. He was forced to flee the country after leading an unsuccessful countercoup against the then military junta, which abolished the monarchy in 1973. Greeks rejected monarchy a second time after the fall of junta in 1974, making Constantine, a cousin to Britain’s Charles III, the last king of Greece.
