The value of Argentina’s currency has dropped so violently in recent years that local artist Sergio Guillermo Diaz feels he can now paint on the highest denomination bills. With annual inflation estimated to have reached nearly 100% last year, the highest face value of the Argentine currency, the 1,000 peso bill, is officially worth about $5.60 (about ¥736). On the informal market, which is often used to circumvent capital controls, it is worth only about $3. Diaz says that painting on bills “makes sense” because “they sell for much more than face value”. Diaz’s work incorporates themes of inflation and the weak peso, as well as recent events, such as Lionel Messi holding up the World Cup trophy.

　近年、アルゼンチンの通貨の価値が激しく下がっているため、地元のアーティスト、セルジオ・ギジェルモ・ディアスさんは、最高額の紙幣にも絵を描けるようになったと実感しているそうです。昨年は年間インフレ率が100％近くに達したとみられ、アルゼンチン通貨の額面が最高の1000ペソ札の価値は公式には約5.60ドル（約736円）。資本規制を回避するためによく使われる非公式市場ではわずか3ドルほどです。ディアスさんは、「額面よりずっと高く売れる」ので、お札に絵を描くことは「理にかなっている」と話します。ディアスさんはインフレやペソ安を題材にした作品や、ワールドカップ優勝杯を掲げるリオネル・メッシ選手など最近の出来事を織り込んだ作品を制作しています。
