American dictionary Merriam-Webster announced 370 new words added as of September 2022 which included topical words such as “subvariant”, “metaverse”, and “supply chain”.
One Japanese word that made the cut was “omakase” which Merriam-Webster defines as a noun meaning a series of small dishes chosen by the chef, or as an adjective and adverb meaning “chef’s choice”.
Other new words include the slang term “baller” which means “excellent “ and the term “shrinkflation” which refers to the reduction of a product’s size to hide a price increase.
アメリカの辞典のメリアム・ウェブスターは370の新語を2022年9月の時点で追加したと発表しました。
“subvariant”, “metaverse”, “supply chain”(「亜種異体」「メタバース」「サプライチェーン」)といった話題の言葉も含まれています。
うち、日本語の「おまかせ」も追加され、メリアム・ウェブスターでは、”Omakase”をシェフによって選ばれる一連の小皿料理を意味する名詞として、もしくは「シェフの選択」を意味する形容詞と副詞として定義しています。
他の新語は「良い」という意味のスラング “baller” や、価格上昇を隠すために商品のサイズを縮小することを指す「シュリンクフレーション」などでした。
