Hello everyone!
How is your spring break going? It’s been getting warm here in Tokyo, but last week, I was away in America to visit Southern California, and the weather there was amazing! The sun was out all day and there was a nice cool breeze which meant that you could walk out on the streets to enjoy the fresh air.
So much of what I saw and felt during the trip was different to what I experience everyday living here in Tokyo. For instance, the streets were much more spacious and there were countless aisles of groceries at the supermarkets which reminded me of the fact that Tokyo is one of the world’s most populated cities. My overall impression was that everything in America – from the toilets to the food portions – were at least twice the size that you would find in Japan!
Although I didn’t get to visit any during my time in Southern California, this state is full of many beautiful beaches and amusement parks that I would love to go to the next time I am around. One of them is the iconic Disneyland, which luckily, was a walking distance from the hotel I stayed at, so I did get a little sneak view of the fireworks at night.
Whilst I had a lot of fun under the sunlight in California, there were also things that I had to be careful of. One of them is the safety of my personal belongings. It felt especially unordinary for me to have to take everything with me to the bathroom or have somebody look after my bags as I am used to the public safety of Japan. Also, I traveled from place to place using a tour bus during the trip, but I have heard about the inconvenience of using public transportation. The vast area of California made it impossible for me to walk between most of them and I saw many cars on the roads.
On the whole, I think that visiting California was a great opportunity for me to get a new and atypical experience whilst allowing me to appreciate the Japanese culture and my home. I highly recommend that you visit this place too!

春休みはいかがお過ごしですか？東京は暖かくなってきましたが、先週、私は南カリフォルニアに行くためにアメリカに行っていました！一日中太陽が出ていて、涼しい風が吹いていたので、新鮮な空気を楽しみながら街を歩くことができました。
旅行中に見たり感じたりしたことの多くは、東京で日常的に体験していることとは大きく違いました。例えば、道路はもっと広々としていて、スーパーマーケットには数え切れないほどの商品が並んでいて、私は東京が世界で最も人口の多い都市のひとつであることを思い知らされました。全体的な印象としては、トイレから食べ物の量に至るまで、アメリカのものはすべて日本の少なくとも2倍はあるということ！
私は今回訪れることはできませんでしたが、カリフォルニアには美しいビーチや遊園地がたくさんあり、次回訪れたときにはぜひ行ってみたいと思っています。そのうちのひとつが有名なディズニーランドで、私が泊まっていたホテルの窓から夜の花火を見ることができました。
しかし、カリフォルニアを存分に楽しめた一方で、気をつけなければならないこともありました。そのひとつが自分の持ち物の安全です。日本の治安の良さに慣れている私にとって、トイレに行くにもすべて持ち物を持っていかなければならなかったり、誰かに荷物を預かってもらわなければならなかったりするのは違和感でした。また、私は旅行中にツアーバスを利用しましたが、公共交通機関を利用することは不便で危険なことがあります。カリフォルニアはとても広いため、ほとんどの場所を歩いて移動することは不可能で、道路では多くの車を見かけました。
最後に、私はカリフォルニアを訪れたことは、日本の文化や故郷に感謝しつつ、新しい非日常的な経験を得る良い機会になったと感じています。ぜひみなさんも行ってみてはいかがですか？
