The Los Angeles Angels’ two-way hero is to appear in a new elementary school 5th grade math textbook from April of 2024. 

Ohtani comments, “I sort of liked math when I was an elementary school student.” in the textbook. “It wasn’t that I did well on math tests, but I liked thinking. And I often use math as a baseball player.” 

For example, Ohtani said, he often “translates his hitting stance into a simple triangle shape and thinks about how to shift his weight.” 

The textbook’s publisher, Tokyo Shoseki Co., said it is the first time the company has featured a celebrity’s quote in a math textbook.

　大谷選手は、教科書のなかで「小学生時代、どちらかといえば算数は好きなほうでした」とコメントしています。「テストの点数がよかったということではないのですが、考えることは好きでしたね。野球選手になった今でも、算数をよく使っています」

　大谷選手は、「例えば、打つ時の構えを単純な三角形にしばしば置き換えて、体重のかけ方を考えています」と述べています。

　この教科書を発行する東京書籍によると、数学の教科書に著名人の談話を取り上げるのは初めてだということです。
