A giant meatball made from flesh cultivated using the DNA of an extinct wooly mammoth was unveiled March 28 at Nemo, a science museum in the Netherlands.

The meatball was created by an Australian cultured meat company that – promising this was not an April Fool’s joke – said it wanted to get people talking about cultured meat, calling it a more sustainable alternative.

The company said one reason for choosing mammoth is that scientists believe the animal’s extinction was caused by climate change. 

The meatball was made of sheep cells inserted with myoglobin extracted from the mammoth. The protein myoglobin is responsible for the aroma, color and taste of meat.

　このミートボールを作ったのはオーストラリアの培養肉会社です。エイプリルフールの冗談ではないとした上で、培養肉がより持続可能な代替品になるとし、世間の話題にしてもらおうと考えたそうです。

　同社によると、マンモスを選んだ理由の一つは、マンモスは気候変動によって絶滅したと科学者たちが考えているからだといいます。

　ミートボールは、マンモスから抽出したミオグロビンを注入した、羊の細胞でできています。ミオグロビンというたんぱく質は、肉の香りや色、味に変化を与えます。
