The government has started to consider lowering the classification of COVID-19 under the infectious disease law, with the possibility of implementing the change next spring at the earliest, government sources said. COVID-19 is currently classified in Category II, the second highest in the five-tier system based on severity and infectiousness. The classification is expected to be lowered to Category V, which includes seasonal influenza. Meanwhile, the government will consider continuing to cover the medical and other costs linked to the coronavirus with public money, taking into account opinions from experts calling for caution. On the use of masks for indoor spaces, which is currently urged in principle, the government will consider a proposal to make it unnecessary except in times when the coronavirus is spreading rapidly and when a simultaneous spread of the coronavirus and seasonal influenza is feared. The proposal will be discussed at a health ministry advisory council.
政府関係者によると、政府が新型コロナウイルスの分類引き下げの検討を開始し、早ければ来春にも実施する可能性が出てきたとのことです。新型コロナウイルスは現在、重症度と感染力を基準にした5段階の分類のうち、2番目に高い「5類」に分類されていますが、季節性インフルエンザを含む4類にが引き下げられる見通しです。一方、新型コロナウイルスに関連する医療費などの公費負担については、慎重な対応を求める専門家の意見も踏まえ、継続を検討するとしています。現在、原則として促している屋内でのマスク着用については、新型コロナウイルスが急速に拡大している時や、季節性インフルエンザとの同時流行が懸念される時以外は不要とする案も検討されます。同案は、厚生労働省の諮問会議で議論される予定です。
