On September 23rd, JR Kyushu started operating the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (bullet train). This 66-kilometer route of the Shinkansen connects Nagasaki station and Takeo-Onsen station in Saga. It took about 50 years from when the project started, and the people close to the station were waiting hopefully for the completion of the Shinkansen.
Using the new Shinkansen will allow customers to travel from Nagasaki station to Hakata station in Fukuoka 30 minutes faster, ultimately taking only about 80 minutes.
For now, a limited express is running between Takeo-onsen station and Hakata station but there has been an idea of making a shinkansen. However Saga has opposed this idea because there is a possibility that the limited express will disappear, meaning the shinkansen will be inconvenient, and because it will cost too much, so they are trying to solve it with the government.
The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen does not connect to other Shinkansens. This means that if you were to travel to Nagasaki from Osaka through Hakata, you would need to change trains 2 times. It seems that new ideas are necessary to attract more travelers and businessmen.

JR九州は9月23日、西九州新幹線(にしきゅうしゅうしんかんせん)の運転を始めました。長崎駅と佐賀県の武雄温泉駅(たけお おんせん)の間の66kmを走ります。計画から約50年かかり、新幹線が通る駅がある町の人たちは楽しみにしていました。
新幹線と特急を使うと、長崎駅から福岡県の博多(はかた)駅 までは30分早くなって、1時間20分ぐらいで行くことができます。
武雄温泉駅と博多駅の間は、今は特急が走っており、この区間に新幹線をつくることについては、佐賀県が反対しています。今の特急がなくなる可能性があって不便になることや、お金がかかることなどが理由で、国と話をしています。
西九州新幹線はほかの新幹線とつながっていません。大阪などから博多駅を通って長崎駅に行くときは、2回乗り換えます。旅行や仕事で新幹線に乗る人をどうやって多くするか考える必要がありそうです。
