Hi guys! Joe here. It almost hits the 1-year mark since I started volunteering for The Clubrooms and being a part of this team has been a wonderful experience. Even though I’ve participated in a number of weekly sessions, I’m surprised about how much inspiration I receive every time I join. My most recent discovery came when I participated in the weekly Thursday reading session for elementary school children. Last time, we read the book “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister (A classic. I recommend checking it out for those who haven’t). I had the role of translating the book into Japanese and reading it to the audience (children). As I was reading it in Japanese, I realized a clear difference in the children’s. reaction – especially their expressions. They seemed to enjoy the book better when my peers read it in English than when I read it in Japanese. The interesting part is, that their Japanese ability presumably exceeds that of English (understanding, speaking, etc..). So, if interpretation is not the cause, what is the reasoning for their contrast in reaction? After considering it, I came to the conclusion that it was whether our presentation (reading) intrigued them or not. It didn’t matter which language we use. The important factor is whether our reading style provokes amusement & excitement or not. I realized that my way of storytelling is not ideal, especially with my low/monotone voice. Like this, the Clubrooms offer not only the children but also the interns a place to reflect and improve their skills. Next time, I will definitely aim to be more enthusiastic when I read aloud.
みなさんこんにちは、joe (Takechanjoe)です！もうすぐThe Clubroomsのインターンシップを初めて一年になります。この一年たくさんのセッションに参加してきましたが、未だに新しい気づきを得ていることにびっくりしています。この前私は週単位で開催している木曜日セッションにて、”The Rainbow Fish”「にじいろのさかな」を子供達に読み聞かせする機会がありました。私の役目は本を日本語訳し、子供達に日本語で物語を読み聞かせすることでした。その時、英語での読み聞かせと日本語の読み聞かせで、子どもたちのリアクション（特に表情）に明確な違いがあり驚きました。英語で話している時の方が楽しそうに反応してくれていたのです。本来なら日本語の方が言語の理解は容易なはずなのに、このようなことが起きたことに疑問が生じました。そこで考えた結果、大切なことは言語ではなく我々の本の読み方であると分かりました。読み聞かせ時に明るく・楽しく喋ることの重要さを理解しました。特に私の低く平坦な声質だと余計につまらなくなってしまうのでしょう。このように、The Clubroomsは生徒のみならず、インターンにも気づきと技術の向上の場を与えてくれると再度実感することができました。今度の読み聞かせはより抑揚をつけて子どもたちに話せるよう、努力します！
