It was in the summer of 2021 when I was listening to my Spotify playlist that a song I didn’t recall started to play. It was “Back Door” by Stray Kids. Prior to this, I had no interest in K-pop whatsoever and it was a surprise that a song that I didn’t understand its language popped up. I gave it a chance and listened to the whole song.
While I had no idea what their Korean lyrics meant, something about the upbeat rhythm and variety of unique voices got me hooked. I searched the music video on YouTube and that’s when it all started…
Their dance, their outfits, their performance, everything was so fresh and cool; I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the video. There was one member in particular who drew me in— it was Felix. His singing voice was unbelievably low and it added a unique spice to their music. Watching their variety show videos, I realized that Felix, while he has an almost intimidating low voice, had the cutest, pure, and sunshine-like personality. I knew from that point on that he was my “bias.” Growing up in Australia, he needed to polish up his Korean, and his hard work to do so alongside the heavy dance practices made me like him even more!
He’s not afraid to break traditional gender stereotypes of masculinity and femininity and embraces both. Going beyond that gender binary, Felix never fails to give me a push in the back and put a smile on my face.
2021年の夏、Spotifyのプレイリストを聴いていると、聴き覚えのない曲が流れ出したことがある。ストレイ・キッズの「Back Door」だった。それ以前はK-POPに全く興味がなく、言葉の意味もわからない曲がヘッドフォン越しで流れたのに驚き、試しに曲を最後まで聴いてみた。
韓国語の歌詞の意味は全くわからなかったが、明るいリズムと個性豊かな歌声に夢中になり、YouTubeでMVを検索したのがすべての始まりだった…
ダンス、衣装、パフォーマンス、すべてが新鮮でカッコよくて、目が離せなくなったのだ。その中でも特に惹かれたのがフィリックス。彼の歌声は信じられないほど低く、グループの音楽に独特のスパイスを加えていたかのようだった。彼らのバラエティー動画を見ていると、フェリックスは低音ボイスでパフォーマンス中は少し威圧感がある反面、性格はとても可愛く天然で、まるで太陽のような存在であることに、この子を「推したい」と思った。オーストラリアで育った彼は、韓国語を練習する必要があり、ダンスと歌の厳しい練習をしながら韓国語の勉強を頑張っている姿に、ますます私の「推し」へとなっていった。
そして彼は、男らしさ、女らしさというジェンダーの固定観念を壊すことを恐れず、両方を自分のものにしている。このような固定概念にとらわれない彼の姿は、私の背中を押してくれ、笑顔にしてくれる存在だ。
