私はThe Clubrooms のボランティアとして、子どもたちが自信を持って人と接することができるよう導く助けになれるのではないかと思い、参加しました。予想外だったのは、彼らとの交流で感じた温かさと共に、懐かしさと羨ましさが湧いてきたことです。
オンラインにもかかわらず、子供たち、高校生、メンターたちの間の雰囲気はとても暖かく、居心地がよかったです。私はズーム会議に何度も参加したことがあるのですが、気まずい沈黙が生まれたり、半分以上の人がカメラやマイクをオフにしたりするのは、ほぼ決まりきったことでした。しかし、The Clubrooms では全員がカメラをオンにし、恥ずかしがらずに発言できる環境でした。
考え込んだり恥ずかしがる必要のない「自信」のようなものに溢れ、まるで子供の頃に戻ったかのように感じました。この自信というのは、やはり10代になると、社会の期待に応えるために人の目を気にし始め、自分の「個性」を隠そうと、削られてしまいます。個人の自信と発言力を育むためにも、The Clubrooms のようなオープンで温かいコミュニティが必要であると、強く感じました。私も、幼い頃にThe Clubrooms のような居心地の良い空間があればよかったと、羨ましく思っています。

I joined the Clubrooms as a volunteer expecting to be able to help guide younger children and teenagers to be more confident in interacting with others. What I did not expect was the surge of nostalgia and a certain taste of jealousy that came with the satisfaction and warmth of interacting with them.
Despite being online, the atmosphere was so warm between the kids, high school students, and mentors. As someone who participates in a lot of zoom meetings, it’s almost protocol for an awkward silence to occur or to have over half of the people with their cameras and mics off. But in the Clubrooms, everyone had their cameras on and were encouraged to speak up without embarrassment.
I felt nostalgic of this unbothered, creative, and spontaneous flow of conversations and comments I would have when I was younger, just like what the kids demonstrated—a certain confidence that didn’t require embarrassment or second thoughts. This confidence is something that tends to be suppressed as we grow into our teenage years because we become self-conscious in the face of society’s expectations. In order to foster our own individual confidence and will to speak up, an open and warm community like the Clubrooms is necessary. The taste of jealousy comes from there—I wished I had a comfortable space like the Clubrooms when I was younger.
