Operators of a mountain ropeway in Japan are testing whether passengers will pay to throw away their trash.
The new paid bins will hopefully solve the problem of visitors who do not sort their waste for recycling.

About 300 thousand people a year ride the ropeway near Mount Tanigawa, northwest of Tokyo, which is especially popular for viewing peak autumn foliage.

The test began late last month and will run through the middle of next month. Bins for burnable trash, plastic bottles, and glass bottles and cans are installed at each end of the ropeway.

Users scan a bin’s QR code with their smartphone and pay 100 yen, or roughly 70 cents, with a credit card or an app, and can then put their waste in it.

Otsuka Yayoi, a Tanigawadake Ropeway employee, said that she hopes such actions by the visitors will contribute to conserving the nature of Mt. Tanigawa.

秋の紅葉シーズンを迎えるなか、群馬県みなかみ町の「谷川岳ロープウェイ」では、観光客にゴミをきちんと分別して捨ててもらおうと、有料のゴミ箱を設置して効果を確かめる実証実験が行われています。

「谷川岳ロープウェイ」は、日本百名山の１つ、谷川岳を間近に見られることから年間３０万人が利用していて、紅葉が見頃を迎えている１８日も大勢の観光客が訪れていました。
ただ、観光客のゴミの分別が長年の課題となっていて、自動販売機の横にあるペットボトルやビン・カン専用の回収箱に、観光客が持ち込んだとみられる弁当箱が入っていることも少なくないということです。
このため有料のゴミ箱を設置して効果を確かめる実証実験が先月下旬から行われています。
有料のゴミ箱は「谷川岳ロープウェイ」を結ぶ２つの駅にそれぞれ、燃えるゴミ、ペットボトル、そしてビン・カンの３種類が置かれ、スマートフォンでＱＲコードを読み取ったうえで１回１００円をキャッシュレス決済で支払い、ゴミを捨てる仕組みです。
実験が始まって１か月ほどで弁当箱を捨てるケースは減っているということで、運営会社の大塚弥生マネージャーは「訪れた人たちが谷川岳の恵まれた自然を守ることができるという意識を持ってもらえれば」と話していました。
