こんにちは、Jessieです！Keiに続いて今回は冬になると毎年思い出す、私の受験体験について少し書いてみようと思います。
私は四年前に一般枠で中学受験をしました。帰国子女でない一般の日本の小学生は平均して三年生くらいで受験勉強を始めますが、私の場合は五年生の時に少し遅いスタートを切りました。では他の受験生よりさらにハードな受験生活だったのかと言えば、全くそんなことはありません。宿題もろくに取り組まず、どうやったらサボれるのか？とばかり考えているダメ受験生でした。(笑)
しかし、そんな私でも最終的には第一志望校だった今の学校に合格することができ、全国模試の順位も一位まであげることができました。このように怠惰すぎる私の受験が成功に終わったのは、たった一つの習慣によるものだと私は確信しています。それは、「楽しいと思うこと」です。なにを子供騙しなと思われるかもしれませんが、ほんとうなんです。
中学受験生に大きく立ちはだかる壁は、ずばり暗記だと思います。一生使うことのない公式を覚え、一度も見たことのない葉っぱの構造を覚え、どこの誰とも知らない人が結婚した年号を覚える。覚えて覚えて覚える、それが一般的な中学受験だという典型が日本にはまだあります。そしてその暗記に必要なのは、ひたすらな反復練習と演習なんです。そしてこの内容が小学生の私にとって恐ろしくつまらなかった。狂気の沙汰だと本気で思っていました。
だから私は、先生たちが勧めるように勉強の内容に興味を持ったり楽しいと思ったりすることはできませんでした。しかし代わりに、勉強すること自体を楽しいと思うことができました。これが「楽しいと思う」ということです。例えば、何回も問題集をといて満点を取れるようになる過程を楽しみました。テストで点数を更新し続けること、模試で順位を上げ続けることを楽しみました。こういった、勉強という行為自体を楽しむことはモチベーションの上昇にも繋がり、結果的には成績の上昇にも繋がりました。他の人よりも多く勉強していたという自覚はありません。しかし短い時間で楽しく勉強することは効率的かつ効果的に勉強するということに直結したのだと思います。
こうして私に徐々に身についた「楽しいと思う力」はもちろん今も役立っています。小さな成功を積み重ねる楽しさと達成感を繰り返す習慣のおかげで試験勉強や宿題、英語学習も何とか乗り越えてきました。受験に取り組む方も、そうでない方も、何か継続して取り組んでいることがある方はぜひ楽しいと思えるポイントを探してみてください。もしかしたら驚くほど簡単に嫌なことも味方につけられるかもしれません。
Hello, this is Jessie. Following Kei, I would like to write a little about my experience of taking the entrance examinations, which I recall every winter.
Four years ago, I took the entrance examination for junior high school in Japan. On average, Japanese elementary school students who are not returnees from abroad start studying for entrance examinations in the third grade, but in my case, I started a little later, in the fifth grade. So, if I were to say that my life was even harder than other students preparing for the entrance exam, that would not be true at all. I was a bad student who didn’t even do my homework well, thinking only, “How can I skip the exam?
However, even though I was able to get into my current school, which was my first choice, and I was able to improve my ranking in the national mock examinations to first place. I am convinced that the reason was because of a habit: Having fun. You may think this is childish, but it is true.
The wall that looms large over students preparing for junior high school is, without a doubt, memorization. Memorizing formulas they will never use, memorizing the structure of a leaf they have never seen, memorizing the year of marriage of who-knows-what. There is still a style that memorizing and memorizing and memorizing, that is the general junior high school entrance exam. And what is needed for that memorization is just constant repetition and practice. And this content was horribly boring to me as an elementary school student. I really thought it was insane.
So I was never able to get interested in or enjoy the study content as much as the teachers recommended. Instead, I found studying itself enjoyable. This is what I mean by “fun. For example, I enjoyed the process of getting a perfect score by working through a book of problems over and over again. I enjoyed the process of continually improving my scores on tests and improving my ranking on mock exams. Enjoying the act of studying in itself increased my motivation, which in turn led to higher grades. I am not aware that I studied more than others. However, I believe that studying in a short period of time and having fun directly led to studying efficiently and effectively.
The “ability to have fun” that I gradually acquired in this way is, of course, still useful today. Thanks to the habit of repeating the enjoyment and sense of accomplishment of accumulating small successes, I have managed to overcome studying for exams, homework, and learning English. Whether you are working on exams or not, if you have something you are continually working on, please try to find the point where you find it fun. Perhaps you will be surprised how easily you can turn something you don’t like into an ally.
