On 10/28 Friday we had a Halloween special session. Throughout the session, we had unique virtual filters on as our “costume”. The session started with a short introduction explaining our memories associated with Halloween. Listening to the stories of everyone made it a great experience to discover cultures all across the globe, and this was truly valuable because Japanese society is unfamiliar with the customs of Halloween. The session also consisted of impersonating a newscaster and translating simple japanese articles into English. As an intern I was paired with a 9-year-old boy “D”. Our article was perhaps the most difficult with difficult language usage and a topic which involved modern economy. Yet, D was able to translate most of the passage with grammatical accuracy and paraphrasing. I was surprised with the academic level of modern elementary school kids and it was a good opportunity to reflect on the possibilities the future generation holds with the increasing attention to international education.
10/28(金)はハロウィンスペシャルセッションを行いました！セッション全体を通して、「コスチューム」として独自のバーチャルフィルターを着用しました。セッションは、ハロウィーンにまつわる個人の思い出を説明する簡単な自己紹介から始まりました。ハロウィンの慣習があまりない日本社会にとって、みんなの体験談を聞くことは、世界中の文化を発見する素晴らしい経験となりました。また、このセッションではニュース キャスターになりきって、簡単な日本語の記事を英語に翻訳することも行われました。インターンとして、私は 9 歳のD君とペアになりました。私たちの記事は、難易度の高い単語が多く、現代の経済に関係するトピックで、おそらく最も難しかったでしょう。それでも、D君は正確な文法と的確言い換えで、ほとんどの文章を翻訳することができました。現代の小学生の学力の高さに驚き、国際教育への関心が高まる次世代の可能性を考える良い機会となりました。(takechanjoe)
