Governor Yamamoto of Gunma Prefecture has announced that the prefecture is considering the use of its own cancer-detecting dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dogs have a sense of smell that is more than one million times greater than that of humans, and studies have shown that dogs can sniff out the scent of cancer through training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u3000In Finland, advanced research is underway to develop a detection dog that can smell cancer and coronaviruses. Governor Yamamoto and the president of the prefectural medical association visited Finland last month and inspected the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Helsinki, which is conducting cutting-edge research on detection dogs. A demonstration experiment was also conducted at an airport in Finland in 2020-21, in which a detection dog was able to identify coronavirus infection with a high 90% accuracy rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Yamamoto commented, “It makes sense for the world to use dogs’ natural ability to reduce natural threats such as coronaviruses. I would like to see a future in which people and pets coexist as partners. We would also like to consider the use of other animals.\u3000<\/p>\n\n\n\n
