Kawasaki Robotics held a demonstration experiment for a new robot that can open doors and deliver drinks.

Called “Nyokkey,” the wheeled robot has two arms and a tray on which drinks are placed. It can knock, open a door, and deliver drinks in lieu of a human server. Currently, it can only open doors that have been pre-programmed, but research is underway to enable it to open any unprogrammed doors in the future.

The company says the robot is intended to help alleviate expected labor shortages in the service industry as the population ages.

ノックをしたり、ドアを開けたり、人間の代わりに飲み物を運んだりすることができます。いまの段階では、あらかじめプログラミングされているドアしか開けることしかできませんが、将来的には初めて見たドアでも開けられるように研究が進められています。
同社によると、このロボットは、高齢化に伴い予想されるサービス業の労働力不足を解消するためのものだそうです。
