The traditional rock garden of a temple in this ancient Japanese capital is being lit up with some 800 candles, creating a fantastic scene for visitors.

The event “Bonto no Akari ni Shitashimu Kai” (Gathering to enjoy the light of tile candles) taking place at Torin-in, a sub-temple on the grounds of Myoshinji temple in Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward, began 25 years ago when old tiles that were no longer needed due to renovation of the main hall were reused as candle saucers.

During a test run on Oct. 13, the “bonto” tile candles were arranged and lit up to spell out the last three of five characters in the Zen phrase, “Konnichi mo Mata Buji,” which roughly translates to “Today, safe again.” The first two characters were written on traditional lamps. The phrase expresses the wish for people to be thankful for being able to live peacefully even amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. from Oct. 14 to 23, and the admission fee is 600 yen (about $4).

京都・妙心寺の石庭が約800個のろうそくで照らされ、幻想的な風景に包まれています。

京都市右京区の妙心寺塔頭・東林院で25年前に始まった「梵燈のあかりに親しむ会」は、本堂の改修で不要になった瓦（かわら）をろうそく受けに再利用したのがきっかけです。

10月13日の試験点灯では、「今日も無事」という禅語の5文字のうち、最初の2文字は、伝統的なランプに書かれ、最後の3文字は梵天（ぼんてん）瓦（かわら）にろうそくを並べて照らされました。この言葉には、コロナウイルスが流行している中でも平穏に暮らせることに感謝してほしいという願いが込められています。

開催期間は10月14日から23日の午後6時から9時までで、入場料は600円です。
