Japanese electronics giant Sony has developed a device to measure an individual’s sense of smell. The company hopes it will eventually be used at hospitals as olfactory measurement could help with the early detection of dementia.
Sony says the equipment can produce 40 different smells. It instantly emits a scent when the operator selects one from a dedicated app. Test subjects also use the app to indicate what they think the smell is.
Olfactory measurement is usually done by letting the subject sniff paper soaked with a liquid that gives off an odor.
However, that requires a special environment to prevent smell leaks affecting the test. The new device is securely sealed and equipped with deodorizing functions so no special room is needed.
The need for olfactory measurement is also increasing amid the coronavirus pandemic. There have been cases in which people suffer problems with their sense of smell after having Covid.
The person who leads the promotion of olfactory businesses at Sony, says he wants to make smells easier to handle by mechanizing their measurement and reducing the burden on examiners. He thinks that as the new equipment makes olfactory measurement easier, it could be used more widely, including for health checkups.

ソニーによると、この装置は、花、果実、腐ったにおいなどの5種類と、その強弱で、計40通りのにおいを出します。それらをかぎわけて嗅覚を測り、専用アプリで結果を確認します。
嗅覚測定は通常、においを発する液体を染み込ませた紙をかいでもらって行われますが、におい漏れが検査に影響しないような環境が必要となります。しかし、今回開発した装置は、しっかりと密閉（みっぺい）され、消臭機能も備えているため、特別な部屋は必要ありません。
コロナウイルスにかかった後に、嗅覚に異常をきたすケースも報告されている中、嗅覚測定のニーズはますます高まっています。
ソニーで嗅覚ビジネスの推進をリードする担当者は、「測定を機械化し、検査員の負担を軽減することで、においを扱いやすくしたい。今回の装置で嗅覚測定が簡単になれば、健康診断などにも広く活用できるのではと考えている。」と話しました。
