The Tokyo Metropolitan Police are stepping up their crackdown on cyclists that recklessly violate traffic rules.

Officials are tightening restrictions as the number of accidents involving bicycles surges.

Tokyo police started issuing citations to bicycle riders whose violations could lead to a serious accident.

The stricter enforcement of the rules began on Monday Oct31st. Previously, police had only issued warnings in such cases, with no penalties.

Cyclists who receive so-called “red tickets” could be liable to criminal punishment. Red ticket violations include ignoring traffic lights or stop signs.

Tokyo police plan to expand their crackdown on bike rule violators, focusing on places with heavy traffic.

東京都内では10月31日から、警視庁が自転車の交通取り締まりを強化することになりました。

自転車の交通違反について警視庁は、これまで罰則をともなわない「警告」にとどめていたケースでも、「信号無視」、「一時不停止」、「右側通行」、「徐行せずに歩道を通行」の4項目のうち、悪質な違反には31日から、刑事罰の対象になる「赤切符」を交付することになりました。

東京都は、交通量の多い場所を中心に、自転車ルール違反者の取り締まりを拡大する予定です。
