Chemistry professor Maitland Jones Jr. was fired from his position at New York University after students filed a petition complaining about the difficulty of his course.

An NYU spokesperson said Jones was terminated because of a high withdrawal rate and very low evaluation scores. However, Jones says he’s noticed a loss of focus in students for the past 10 years, especially during the pandemic.

Jones taught at Princeton for 40 years before joining NYU and pioneered a form of problem-based teaching there. The 84-year-old says he doesn’t want his job back, but hopes the same thing doesn’t happen to anyone else.
