Governor Yamamoto of Gunma Prefecture has announced that the prefecture is considering the use of its own cancer-detecting dogs.

Dogs have a sense of smell that is more than one million times greater than that of humans, and studies have shown that dogs can sniff out the scent of cancer through training.

　In Finland, advanced research is underway to develop a detection dog that can smell cancer and coronaviruses. Governor Yamamoto and the president of the prefectural medical association visited Finland last month and inspected the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Helsinki, which is conducting cutting-edge research on detection dogs. A demonstration experiment was also conducted at an airport in Finland in 2020-21, in which a detection dog was able to identify coronavirus infection with a high 90% accuracy rate.

Governor Yamamoto commented, “It makes sense for the world to use dogs’ natural ability to reduce natural threats such as coronaviruses. I would like to see a future in which people and pets coexist as partners. We would also like to consider the use of other animals.　

群馬県の山本知事は、がんや新型コロナウイルスをにおいで嗅ぎ分ける探知犬の先端研究が進むフィンランドと連携し、県独自でがん探知犬の活用を検討する考えを明らかにしました。　　

犬は嗅覚が人間の100万倍以上とされ、訓練によってがんのにおいを嗅ぎ分けることが研究で報告されています。

　山本知事と県医師会の会長らは先月フィンランドを訪問し、先端の探知犬研究をしているヘルシンキ大獣医学部を視察しました。フィンランドの空港では2020～21年に探知犬がコロナ感染を識別する実証実験も実施され、9割の高確率で嗅ぎ分けたそうです。

　山本知事は「コロナウイルスなど自然の脅威を自然の力である犬の能力で抑えるのは世の中の理にかなう。人とペットがパートナーとして共生する未来を目指したい。がん探知犬などいろんな動物の活用を検討したい」」とも述べました。
