McDonald’s Japan says it will stop offering plastic straws and cutlery to customers in an attempt to reduce plastic waste. It will provide paper straws and wooden spoons and forks instead at its roughly 2,900 restaurants across Japan starting from this Friday, the October 7th.

The company expects it will be able to cut plastic use by about 900 tons a year.

Rival burger chain Mos Burger says from this month it will replace its takeout spoons and forks with ones made with plant-derived biomass plastic.

Legislation that took effect in April requires Japanese businesses providing large amounts of plastic products for free to make efforts to reduce the use of plastic.

日本マクドナルドは、日本中の約2,900の店舗(てんぽ)で今週金曜日10月7日からプラスチック製のストローとカトラリーの提供を中止すると発表しました。プラスチック廃棄物(はいきぶつ)を減らすため、紙や木でできたものに切り替える予定です。
同社は、年間約900トンのプラスチック使用量を削減できると見込んでいます。
一方、ライバル・ハンバーガーチェーンであるモスバーガーでは、今月からテイクアウト用のスプーンやフォークを植物由来のバイオマスプラスチックで作られたものに切り替えるとしています。
ことし4月から法律で、大量のプラスチック製品を無料で提供する日本の企業に対して、プラスチック使用量を減らす努力をするよう求めています。
