Hi I’m Miyako. I have loved and played baseball for a long time, so I was incredibly excited to have the opportunity to attend the 2026 MLB All-Star Week as a Student Correspondent from Japan. I was selected to take part in this program, which gave me the opportunity to experience the All-Star Week events in person and interview the MLB players.

I had never imagined that I would actually be able to stand in front of MLB players and talk to them so I was nervous, but I was also extremely excited to experience something that I would never be able to in my everyday life.

Meeting MLB Players and Watching the Home Run Derby

On the morning of Day 2, we visited the Museum of Illusions. I took many fun photos with the other students and enjoyed exploring the different exhibits. After that, we had lunch at a Mexican restaurant before heading to the most exciting part of the day: Interviewing MLB players.

This was the most memorable experience of the entire trip.

I had the opportunity to interview several players. Since I can speak both English and Japanese, I interviewed international players in English and Japanese players in Japanese.

Among them, the players who left the strongest impression on me were Jordan Walker, Mike Trout, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Munetaka Murakami.

First, I interviewed Jordan Walker, who later won the Home Run Derby.
I asked him, “What is your approach for tonight’s Home Run Derby, and who influences your swing?”
He explained that his approach was to pull the ball into the air and try to hit it over the fence. His hitting staff gives him advice on how to approach it. He jokingly added that he was not going to reveal all of his secrets yet and that we would have to wait and see how the Homerun Derby goes.

It was really interesting to hear about his mindset directly from a player who was about to compete in the biggest home run competitions in baseball. At that point, I did not know how the night would end, so it was exciting to watch the Home Run Derby later that day and see Jordan Walker become the champion.

I also interviewed Mike Trout. I asked him a question that was relatable to me because I play both baseball and golf.
I asked, “I play both baseball and golf. Do you think playing golf has helped you become a better baseball player?”
He said that he did think golf had helped him. Many people believe golf can negatively affect a baseball swing, but he feels the opposite. He shared a story about playing in Albert Pujols’ golf tournament on a baseball off-day, and on the next day, he hit for the cycle.

What I found especially interesting was his explanation that when his golf swing is working well and he is hitting the ball straight rather than hooking or slicing it, he feels that his baseball swing benefits as well.
Since I also play both sports, hearing this from Mike Trout was very instructive for me. It made me think about the similarities between the two sports and how skills from one sport can influence another.

I also interviewed Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Munetaka Murakami in Japanese.

For Yamamoto, I asked about the differences between playing in Japan and playing in MLB, and what part of his game he felt had grown the most since coming to the United States.

For Murakami, I asked what he would have wanted to do if he could go back to his middle and high school years, as well as what his dream was when he was a student.

Being able to speak directly with Japanese players who are competing at the highest level in MLB was a very special experience for me.

After the interviews, we watched the Home Run Derby.

Watching the competition after interviewing Jordan Walker made the event even more exciting. I could remember the conversation I had with him earlier in the day while watching him compete. Just a matter of time, we left earlier so we were not able to watch till the end, but when I got notified that he won the Home Run Derby, I was amazed that I had interviewed the champion just a few hours earlier.
