Thousands of Japanese  fans, some wiping away ears, bid farewell to a beloved Japanese-born giant panda that made her final public appearance Feb. 19 before flying to her home country, China. The panda fans gathered at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo for one last look at Xiang Xiang, the park’s idol since her birth in June 2017. 

The viewing was limited to 2,600 lucky ones who won their tickets in a lottery. But many others  who didn’t win came anyway to say their goodbyes from outside of the panda house. China sends pandas  abroad as a sign of goodwill but maintains ownership over the animals and any cubs they produce.  In China, Xiang Xiang will search for a partner at a giant panda conservation and research facility in the inland province of Sichuan.

　人々に愛された日本生まれのジャイアントパンダが２月19日、母国の中国へ飛行機で飛び立つ前、最後の姿を見せた。数千人のファンが別れを告げ、なかには涙をぬぐう人もいた。

　2017年６月に生まれて以来、シャンシャンは上野動物園の人気者だった。その姿を最後に一目見ようとファンが駆けつけました。

　一般公開は、高倍率の抽選に当選した幸運な2600人に限定されました。しかし、抽選に外れた多くの人が、とにかく別れを告げようと園内のパンダ舎の外にやってきました。

　中国はパンダを親善の証しとして海外へ送り出してきましたが、生まれてきた子どもを含めて所有権は持ち続けています。
中国に戻ったあとは、シャンシャンは内陸部の四川省にあるジャイアントパンダの保護・研究施設でパートナーを探す予定です。
